It is intended for exploring, camping, heading out for a nice row, fitness session, or a delightful day sail. Wherever it goes, it draws a crowd admiring its fine lines and elegant appearance.<br>\nThis boat floats in only 6 inches of water with its bronze centerboard and kick up rudder fully retracted. This means it can sail or row into quiet, unexplored, uncrowded spots that are not accessible by large craft. It’s totally beachable for landing and exploring the shoreline or setting up camp. It’s easily towed by a larger vessel or on a small trailer behind almost any car for highway or off-road travel. <br>\n<br>\nWe have thoroughly enjoyed our time with “Summarvindar”.  We are moving to a small lake and will be looking for a smaller boat more fitting the new environment.  We have explored the coastal waters of the Salish Sea with sunset rows in standard configuration with four adults, day sailing to islands with 2 adults, and successfully competed in the SEVENT48 race from Tacoma to Port Townsend finishing in 24 hours (The race is a 70 miles race with any human powered craft within a 48 hour time limit). It is an incredibly seaworthy, beautifully designed, and flexible vessel.<br>\n<br>\nSailing: As with all Whitehall Spirit models, the sailing gear is quick and easy to set up or remove without the need of specialized tools. The mast simply lifts out or into its reinforced support socket. The mainsail boom includes a bronze clew outhaul fitting. The mast is two-part Sitka spruce, meticulously varnished and fitted with a carbon fiber sleeve. The two parts enables compact stowage inside the boat. The Expedition mast accommodates a roller furling light air jib. This light air jib mounts on the removable teak bowsprit and furls from the cockpit.<br>\n<br>\nThe boat can be sailed with the mast set up free standing, however included is a pair of leathered Dyneema running backstays with custom deadeye tensioners, beautiful purple heartwood blocks, that provide better headstay stiffness, sail shape, and windward sailing ability. Jiffy reefing gear on the mainsail is standard. The mainsail can be reefed while out sailing. The fixed seats are removable to provide more space when sailing if desired.<br>\n<br>\nSculling: The Expedition 17 package includes two slide seat sculling units with bronze hinging outriggers. The slide seat units can be removed or installed in minutes. Included are 2 pairs of wood sculling oars and 2 pairs of Dreher Carbon Fiber sculling oars. <br>\n<br>\nTraditional Rowing: With the fixed seats installed the boat can be rowed by one, two or three people. Included in the package are two pair of Barkley Sound spruce oars with Leather collars and pressure cast bronze oarlocks.
