We have
\nowned this boat for 12 years and she has never given us the least bit of
\ntrouble. She is dry, simple and inexpensive to maintain, sails great and
\nis easy to handle, and is overall clean and well-kept. She is a 1972
\nboat, so shows some age, but still presents well and holds her own
\nagainst other Catalinas of a similar vintage.
\n
\nShe has a fairly new main sail and a mid-life head sail on roller
\nfurling. Most of the rigging is in place for a spinnaker, but we have
\nnever had one on this boat. She would just need a halyard and if you
\nwant, a spinnaker pole. The standing and running rigging are all in good
\nshape. The outhaul and reefing mechanisms could stand to be
\nreconsidered, just because they are rigged unusually, but they are
\nfunctional and in good condition.
\n
\nWe bought the 9.9 HP Yamaha engine brand new and have maintained it
\nreligiously. It operates reliably and flawlessly, starting with the
\nlightest touch on the ignition. It is an inboard-outboard configuration
\non a power tilt. So, a remote switch tilts the engine out of the water
\nwhen not under power, and the engine itself sits in a transom locker out
\nof the way. Engine controls are fully remote in the cockpit, and docking
\nis really easy with no drama or contortion to reach the engine controls.
\n
\nInside, starting at the bow, there is a V-berth that sleeps two adults,
\nwith tons of storage in three lockers under the berth. The sides of the
\nV-berth have generous shelves that are large enough to stow duffle bags
\nand still not interfere with sleeping.
\n
\nJust aft, to port, is a hanging locker. We keep foulies and PFDs for
\nfour adults in there, so there is plenty of room. An additional shelf
\nabove the locker is perfect for things that need to be handy like gloves
\nand hats. To starboard is a head that was rebuilt a few years ago. It is
\na manual pump head that drains to a generous holding tank. There is a
\nnew seacock installed to drain waste water outside when sailing
\noffshore, but we have never attached it to the holding tank or head. The
\nholding tank is pumped out by a waste port on deck.
\n
\nAmidships, to port is a nice little galley. There is a small sink with a
\nmanual pump from a flexible freshwater tank, an icebox, and a two-burner
\nalcohol stove which we absolutely love. The stove is covered by a
\nbutcher block cutting board, when not in use, and there is a decent
\namount of counterspace for a boat this size.
\n
\nTo starboard, is a dinette that seats four. The end of the table folds
\ndown to allow a little more elbow room when you don't need the whole
\ntable. And, the table drops down to convert the dinette into a
\ndouble-berth that sleeps two adults comfortably.
\n
\nThere is a good amount of storage throughout the galley and dinette,
\nwith multiple drawers, lockers, shelves, and cubby holes.
\n
\nFurther aft, to port there is additional seating and a quarter berth. It
\nis technically only for one adult, but the two of us slept there and
\nfound it surprisingly comfortable. Lots of locker space under the
\nseating and berth. To starboard, there is another quarter berth that is
\na little more challenging to get into and out of. So, it is either for
\nan agile individual or just use it for storage, like we do.
\n
\nThe companionway steps are easily removable to access a cavernous
\nstorage area under the cockpit.
\n
\nOverall, about half of the vinyl cushions are in good shape. The other
\nhalf is due for repair or reupholstery, but is still present and functional.
\n
\nThe electricity and electronics are pretty basic. There is currently
\nonly one 12v battery on board, but she is wired with a battery isolator
\nto manage a house bank separately from a starter battery. She is also
\nwired for 120v AC power when attached to shore power. There is no
\ninverter. Overall, the electrical system should be reviewed. There is
\nnothing crazy. It just got disorganized this last winter when we removed
\na defective battery. Currently, the engine starter and house run off of
\nthe same battery.
\n
\nThere is a modern VHF radio with a mast-mounted antenna. She also has an
\nAM/FM/MP3/Aux radio with marine speakers mounted in the cabin. The
\ninterior lighting has been converted to LEDs with both red and white
\nlight modes.
\n
\nThe cockpit seats four adults and has a storage locker to port and
\nanother to starboard. She is tiller steered. The stern locker
\ncomfortably holds fuel tanks and accommodates the engine when it is
\nraised. She has a depth sounder, knotmeter, and compass. A Bruce and a
\nDanforth anchor are stored with chain and rode in the aft locker. There
\nis a chain locker in the bow below the bow roller, but no hawsepipe
\naccess from the deck.
\n
\nThere are a few things to do on this boat, but she is not a project
\nboat. We sail her regularly and you could (and should) start sailing her
\nimmediately. She is due for bottom paint. We have scheduled a haulout,
\nbut if we have the bottom painted, we will need to raise the price.
\n
\nWhen I buy a used boat, I don't mind having a few projects, as long as I
\nknow what they are going into the boat. So, in an effort to be
\ntransparent and help you make a good decision, here's what we would do
\non this boat this year, if we kept her:
\n- bottom paint
\n- reupholster some or all cushions
\n- replace the house battery and tidy up the wiring in the battery
\ncompartment
\n- perform a little preventative maintenance on the sails
\n- tighten up one of the lifelines
\n
\nThat's honestly about it. She is simple and straightforward. The deck
\nand hull are in great shape with no soft spots and no blisters found at
\nthe last haulout.
\n
\nWe are selling this boat because we bought another larger boat, but we
\nstill love her very much. We have priced her to sell and this is a
\nreally fair price. Since she is hauled out for you, that is not
\nsomething you will need to pay for. If we do not sell her this week, we
\nwill probably increase the price and just be patient.
\n
\nCurrently, she is stored out of the water at Seaview in Fairhaven. We
\npulled her out on June 13 to make room for our new boat. This is a great
\nopportunity to inspect the hull before buying, without having to pay for
\na haulout. She is prepped and awaiting bottom paint, but should not be
\npainted until she is ready to go into the water. The hull looks great.
\nWe will upload photos when we get them.
\n","original_price":"$4,000","price":6000,"year":1972,"size":27,"original_url":"https://bellingham.craigslist.org/boa/d/bellingham-catalina-27-tessa-1972/7795709114.html","createdAt":"2024-10-22T23:46:23.000Z","updatedAt":"2024-10-22T23:46:23.000Z","listAttrs":[{"id":9033123,"list_id":900702,"attr_name":"boat
